Antigua Travel: Getting from Here to There, Rental or No Rental Car?

.

Antigua really is not that big, but you will have to decide whether or not you think it is worth it to rent a car or not. If you do, take note that the roads are not up to European or American standards and you will find yourself trying to avoid numerous potholes ranging from small to quite large. I can honestly say that this is an adventure in itself!

Taxis are available and the pricing is regulated so that you do not have to worry about being taken or unsure of what to expect. Taxi drivers are often also very willing to be “tour” guides and can often tell you about local history, good restaurants, and sites that you must see.

There are no tour buses in Antigua, so if you want to venture out from the area you are staying at you will have to choose whether or not you want a rental car or whether you want to just take a taxi when needed. I tend to think that a Taxi is a better choice unless you are either staying an extended amount of time in Antigua, or if your goal is tour all the major places throughout Antigua.

Taking a rental up into the tropical hills can be quite a bit of fun, but remember there are few road signs and you probably better be ready and willing to ask for directions. Although a small island, it is easy to get off track and wonder where you are!

Most people who are taking an Antigua vacation are going for the white sands, beaches and tropical setting and will stay in one of the many Antigua Resorts. Their plan IS to stay close to their resort, if this is you, then you do not need a rental car, a taxi will serve you just fine, and you most likely can walk to many of the places you want to go as well.
